Finally cracked the Wi-Fi encryption

I know it sounds silly. How can something that's this simple elude me for so long? But it has. I have been having this Wi-Fi router (Belkin) almost forever and was using it as an unsecured network. I still have download limits so wanted to secure the same. Went through the manual and felt like a simple thing to do. But as I enabled encryption it would lock me out. Tried a million times and the same would happen. I'll reset and then try again to the same effect. Went on this way for a couple of years now. Finally I have cracked it.
I entered my pass phrase in a web site to find out what would be my key. I used the key to access my Wi-Fi network. I still don't know if this is how it has to be done. Can anybody clarify?
